ast fall, Alec Stuart and Celeste Wright (both formerly of Steven Alan) decided to try their own thing and set up shop in Fort Greene, Brooklyn—one year later, Stuart & Wright has blossomed into a shop that's become a must for anyone on the Brooklyn shopping circuit. Channeling the local vibe, Stuart & Wright is all about casual cool, offering an assortment of clothing that caters to both men and women, and more specifically, says Wright, "to local art and fashion students, creative-minded freelancers, neighborhood old-timers, and fashion-conscious shoppers." As a result, Stuart & Wright carries a wide assortment of labels drawn from personal favorites, including Isabel Marant, Lyell, and A.P.C. for the ladies, and Rachel Comey, Steven Alan, and Band of Outsiders for the gents.
But Stuart & Wright isn't just about smart contemporary duds, but an overall shopping experience. "For us, the most important thing is to create an atmosphere that is accessible to everyone," says Wright. "We want to create an environment that is approachable and not in the least intimidating—equal parts neighborhood hangout and fashion destination." The store itself was designed by Norwegian architect Ole Sondresen who more than succeeded in making this a place to kick back—pale wood paneled walls flow seamlessly into the floors, and the décor is pleasingly streamlined, giving the goods on hand even more of an impact.
The Goods: A unisex offering of all things casual with a slight edge, from great denim, hoodies, and blazers, to some sweet and simple dresses all by the likes of Parisian designer Isabel Marant, United Bamboo, A.P.C., Rogues Gallery, Unis, and Manhattan standby, Steven Alan.
